Advantages And Disadvantages Of Internet Communication – Breaking The
Barriers With Information & Knowledge
The advantages and disadvantages of Internet communication will always exist
side by side. We must strive to break the barriers with information, knowledge
and communication. Over years, from a small beginning as a Defense Department
project, Internet has blossomed into a most potent communication tool,
completely changing the way we once interacted.
The Internet has made life more convenient and enjoyable by enabling instant
connections between people. E-mail is one inexpensive and a very convenient way
to exchange messages instantly between friends and family.
Internet provides instant global reach. Businesses are making increasing use of
the advantages of Internet communication. Promoting products and services
through the net has distinct advantages over the traditional and conventional
methods via print and air media - the versatility, reach, interactivity,
accessibility, and immediacy of the net is unmatched.
Disadvantages - The Flip Side
Disadvantages of Internet communication can in no way surpass its advantages.
However, it has created its own negative side. Where, on one side, we have
instant communication through Emails, on the flip side we have junk mails,
spams, unwanted advertisements, filling up our inboxes. Where, on one side, we
have instant access to unimaginable amount of useful information, there, on the
other side, we have unwanted exposure to sexually explicit junk mails.
Some of the positive forms of Internet communication are:
• E-mail. A way to communicate instantly. Small businesses, too, use E-mails to
send promotional literature.
• Instant Messaging. Enables you to communicate in real time. With E-mail you
wait for the response to come in.
• Internet Telephony. Enables use of the Internet as a medium for transmitting
telephone calls.
• Videoconferencing. Multiple participants at different locations holding a
conference through computer networks, transmitting audio data and vides images.
• SMS and MMS communication. Short message service (SMS) and Multimedia
Messaging Service (MMS) enabling, respectively, transmission of alphanumeric
messages and a combination of text, sounds, images and video.
Some of the negative forms of Internet communication are:
• Lack of face-to-face communication.
• Decreased contact with family, friends and acquaintances.
• Reduced ability to resolve conflicts.
• Long exposure leading to loneliness and depression.
• Exposure to junk mails, spams etc.
• Exposure of young people to pornography and sexual predators.
We need to break down the negative barriers with information & knowledge.
