Disadvantages Of Internet Business - Global Exposure, But At What Cost
The disadvantages of Internet business include lack of direct contact between
the buyer and the seller, making the whole thing appear cold and inhuman.
Undoubtedly, Internet business has broken all geographical barriers with its
global exposure . . . but at what cost? Internet business has created barriers
of its own. It is human to socialize and meet people but in this instance, in a
business sense, it makes you feel isolated.
The advent of Internet has given businesses higher visibility. Along with it is
its ability to reach out to millions of potential customers with their product
promotions. However, who is to say what is ‘quality’ promotion and what is not.
People new to Internet could be hyped by promotions like, “Do nothing and make
money.” These hypes have a detrimental effect on genuine businesses too.
Information Overload
Internet, the superhighway of information, has completely changed the way we do
business. There is so much information available on so many websites that this
is ‘too much of a good thing’ and is actually more of a disadvantage of Internet
business than its advantage. The massive amount of data presented is
overwhelming. To overcome competition, the amount of promotional material being
offloaded onto the web is so high that it leaves a potential buyer more confused
than he was, to begin with. For a new Internet shopper it is difficult to decide
what to choose.
This most powerful business tool can be a disadvantage in wrong hands. When
doing business on Internet you have to give out a lot of personal information,
like name and address. When shopping, your credit card information can be
‘stolen’ and misused. This is like handing over a blank check.
To list out some of the disadvantages of Internet business:
• Businesses and customers isolated. This is a very common ‘negative’ as there
is no face-to-face contact.
• Hype or genuine promotion. With the overabundance of promotional information,
it is difficult to tell what is genuine and what is not.
• Information Overload. This leaves one more confused than one was, to begin
with.
The advantages of doing business on the Internet far exceed its disadvantages,
and there is no doubt that the barriers that the disadvantages of Internet
business have created will be pulled down, and very soon.
