Internet Search Engines
Internet Search Engines are designed to make surfing the web simple, fast and rewarding for Internet users. They gather together information, store it in a database, and allow you to access a list of individual pages based on a word, or set of words that you submit in the form of a query. When you perform a search, the user has to enter is keywords that the database can search that document for in Internet Search Engines.
These keywords can be found in categories. Such as music, games, movies. Depending on what the user would wish to look up. These categories help the Internet Search Engines to narrow down the specific information that is needed. The Internet Search Engines assemble a web page that list the results of the keywords entered in. They lay out links to other pages and how many results or links were found.

There are three main types of Internet Search Engines: basic, subject-directory and meta-search engines.
Basic Internet Search Engines are searchable database or index, containing thousands or millions of web sites, pages or documents. They allow the user to search by entering keyword(s) or phrases, and then execute the search in its database to find matches to the query. A list of search results or hits is then provided.
Subject-directory Internet Search Engines allow the user to search by entering keyword(s) or phrases, or by selecting subject headings. These Internet Search Engines can be general in scope or focused on a specific area, such as biomedicine.
Meta-search engines allow the user to search by entering keyword(s) or phrases, and then execute the search in more than one search engine's database, at one time. For example, MetaCrawler currently searches ten internet Search Engines databases at once, searching About.com, AltaVista, Direct Hit, Excite, InfoSeek, LookSmart, Lycos, Thunderstone, WebCrawler and Yahoo!
