Online Shopping Cart System – How Does it Work?
You may be familiar with using online shopping carts, but do you know how an online shopping cart system works? If you are contemplating setting one up for your e-business, then it is probably a good idea to learn at least the basics of an online shopping cart system. Even if you are going to have another company handle your business’s shopping cart, you as the business owner should be familiar with the service they are providing.
The goal of a business that provides online shopping is to make the experience as user friendly as possible for the customer. What an online shopping cart system does is provide an easy to use interface between an online business and the shopper. It creates a link between the various web pages of the business and a special page where the shopper can see the products they have chosen.
An online shopping cart system works the same way a real-life shopping cart does. In the grocery store a shopper can look down in your cart and see what items they have taken from the shelves with the intention of purchasing them. With an online shopping cart system a shopper can look on a particular web page and see what they have selected to buy from the online business website on which they are shopping.
Once a shopper has chosen their items with the online shopping cart system, they can either proceed to the purchasing pages or browse more items. The items in their cart will remain intact while they continue to shop and hopefully select more stuff to buy. These newly selected items can be easily added to the shopping cart. If a shopper changes their mind about an item, the item can be just as easily removed from the cart.
A majority of the online shopping cart systems use cookies to keep track of what a customer has selected. The program writes a cookie to the shopper’s computer, and the data for the items in their cart are linked to this cookie. In applications where this information is stored on the customer’s computer, the customer can return to an online shopping cart system even days later and their items will still be in their cart.
Some online shopping cart systems do not use cookies in conjunction with their sites, and on these sites a customer’s shopping cart is emptied when the customer leaves the website. The downfall of this is that if a shopper chooses to go to another site in the midst of their shopping, perhaps to do some last minute research on the items they have chosen, when they return to the site their shopping cart information will have been cleared. This can lead to frustration, or in the worst case they will simply move on to another supplier of the product they were shopping for.
Whichever type of program you choose for your online shopping cart system, it will be well worth the simple and user-friendly interface it provides your customers.
